Electrocochleography

What is Electrocochleography?

Electrocochleography (ECoG) is a specialized diagnostic test used to measure the electrical signals generated in the inner ear (cochlea) in response to sound. It helps evaluate how effectively sound is being transmitted from the inner ear to the auditory nerve. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing inner ear disorders, especially conditions like Ménière’s disease and abnormal fluid pressure within the ear.

Who Needs This Test?

ECoG is usually advised when patients experience symptoms that suggest inner ear imbalance or pressure-related issues. It is commonly recommended in cases of:

This test helps specialists confirm whether these symptoms are linked to inner ear dysfunction.

How the Test is Performed

The procedure is safe and minimally invasive. A small electrode is placed either in the ear canal or on the eardrum, while sound stimuli are delivered through earphones. The electrode records the electrical responses of the inner ear to these sounds. The test is performed in a controlled environment and usually takes a short time to complete, with minimal discomfort for the patient.

What Do the Results Indicate?

The results help assess inner ear pressure and function. Abnormal findings may indicate conditions such as Ménière’s disease or other cochlear disorders. Based on the results, your specialist will guide you on the next steps, which may include further testing or a tailored treatment plan.
