What is BERA?

Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), also known as Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), is an advanced diagnostic test used to evaluate how sound signals travel from the inner ear to the brainstem. It measures the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and brain pathways in response to sound.

This test is especially useful for detecting hearing loss in individuals who cannot respond to conventional hearing tests, such as newborns, young children, or patients with neurological concerns.

Who Needs This Test?

BERA is recommended for patients where detailed assessment of the hearing nerve and brain pathways is required. You may need this test if you:

  • Suspect hearing loss in infants or young children
  • Have difficulty responding to standard hearing tests
  • Experience unexplained hearing loss
  • Have tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Have suspected nerve-related (sensorineural) hearing issues

How the Test is Performed

BERA is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure conducted in a calm and quiet setting. During the test:

  • Small electrodes are placed on the scalp and behind the ears
  • Earphones deliver clicking sounds or tones
  • The electrodes record the brain’s electrical response to these sounds
  • The patient is required to remain still; infants may be tested while sleeping

The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
