What is it?

Impedance Audiometry, also called Tympanometry, evaluates the function of the middle ear by checking eardrum movement, ear pressure, and the condition of the tiny hearing bones.

Why is it essential?

It is highly useful for diagnosing glue ear, fluid behind the eardrum, ear infections, Eustachian tube blockage, perforated eardrum, and middle ear disorders. It is especially valuable for children with repeated ear infections, hearing difficulties, or delayed speech. Who Needs This Test?

Tympanometry is recommended for both adults and children who are experiencing symptoms related to the middle ear. You may need this test if you:

  • Have ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Experience hearing loss or muffled hearing
  • Have frequent ear infections
  • Notice pressure changes or discomfort during flying or altitude changes
  • Have a history of eardrum problems

It is also commonly used in children to detect fluid in the middle ear.

How the Test is Performed

Tympanometry is a quick and non-invasive procedure that takes only a few minutes. During the test:
  • A small probe is gently placed into the ear canal
  • The device changes air pressure within the ear
  • Sound is played, and the movement of the eardrum is measured
  • The test records how well the eardrum responds to pressure changes

You may feel slight pressure in the ear, but the test is not painful.
