What is Tympanometry?

Tympanometry is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the condition of the middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane). It helps detect problems such as fluid buildup, ear infections, Eustachian tube dysfunction, or perforation of the eardrum. This test plays an important role in identifying the cause of hearing loss and ear discomfort.

Who Needs This Test?

Tympanometry is recommended for both adults and children who are experiencing symptoms related to the middle ear. You may need this test if you:

  • Have ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Experience hearing loss or muffled hearing
  • Have frequent ear infections
  • Notice pressure changes or discomfort during flying or altitude changes
  • Have a history of eardrum problems

It is also commonly used in children to detect fluid in the middle ear.

How the Test is Performed

Tympanometry is a quick and non-invasive procedure that takes only a few minutes. During the test:
  • A small probe is gently placed into the ear canal
  • The device changes air pressure within the ear
  • Sound is played, and the movement of the eardrum is measured
  • The test records how well the eardrum responds to pressure changes

You may feel slight pressure in the ear, but the test is not painful.
