Tonsils are small glands located at the back of the throat that play an important role in fighting infections during early childhood. As you grow older, their role becomes less significant.

In some cases, removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) is recommended when they begin to cause ongoing health problems such as frequent infections, airway obstruction, or other complications.

Why is Surgery Recommended?

Tonsillectomy may be advised in the following situations:

  • Recurrent sore throats that persist despite medical treatment and affect quality of life
  • Difficulty breathing or airway blockage due to enlarged tonsils
  • Repeated episodes of tonsil abscess (quinsy)
  • Suspicion of a tumor in the tonsil (rare cases)

Pre-Surgery Considerations

Before your procedure, it is important to:

  • Plan for 10–14 days off work for recovery
  • Inform your doctor if you have a chest infection or active tonsillitis
  • Share any history of excessive bleeding, bruising, or related family conditions
  • Follow all pre-operative instructions provided by your healthcare team

The Procedure

  • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia
  • Duration is typically around 30 minutes
  • Tonsils are removed through the mouth — no external cuts or stitches required
  • Bleeding is carefully controlled during the procedure

Modern surgical techniques may include:

  • Electric diathermy
  • Harmonic scalpel
  • Coblation technology

Hospital Stay

  • Most patients are advised to stay one night in the hospital
  • In selected cases, it may be performed as a day-care procedure, depending on clinical assessment and proximity to the hospital

Possible Risks & Complications

  • Bleeding (most significant risk, occurs in ~5% of cases)
  • Minor risk of tooth damage during surgery
  • Temporary changes in taste sensation

Recovery & Post-Operative Care

  • Expect a sore throat for 7–10 days
  • Take regular pain relief medication as prescribed
  • Avoid aspirin, as it may increase bleeding risk
  • Eat soft, cold foods (e.g., ice cream, yogurt) to soothe the throat
  • Stay well hydrated and avoid spicy or hard foods
  • Mild ear pain is common and not a cause for concern
  • A white coating in the throat is normal during healing
  • Rest at home for 10–14 days
